Canada-Karandeep— Prime Minister Mark Carney discussed trade, investment, energy cooperation and Caribbean resilience during separate meetings with three Commonwealth leaders on November 3, according to statements from the Prime Minister’s Office.

The meetings with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Guyanese President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, and Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Gaston Browne took place on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in St. John’s. Carney and Albanese reviewed cooperation in energy, critical minerals, security and defence, and artificial intelligence, noting progress in bilateral relations since the Canadian prime minister’s visit to Australia in March.

With Canada-Australia bilateral trade totalling nearly $8 billion last year, the leaders explored opportunities to expand trade, investment and financial sector partnerships. They also discussed closer regulatory cooperation to facilitate innovation and commercial ties. In his meeting with Ali, Carney discussed opportunities in energy, mining, infrastructure and agriculture. Canada-Guyana trade reached nearly $360 million last year, the Prime Minister’s Office said. The two leaders welcomed progress on a proposed framework for enhanced trade, investment and economic cooperation. They also considered a potential foreign investment promotion and protection agreement, which would provide greater predictability for investors in both countries. Their discussions included regional priorities and efforts to strengthen resilience across the Caribbean.

During his meeting with Browne, Carney thanked Antigua and Barbuda for hosting the Commonwealth gathering. The prime ministers discussed strengthening cooperation in trade and investment, energy, climate resilience, youth and tourism, as well as people-to-people ties and the priorities of small island developing states. Carney and Browne also reaffirmed their commitment to collaboration through the Commonwealth, the Caribbean Community and other multilateral forums, and agreed to deepen bilateral dialogue. The leaders agreed to remain in close contact following each of the three meetings.
