Karandeep-Ottawa, Ontario — Prime Minister Mark Carney has issued a statement marking National Public Service Week, paying tribute to Canada's federal public servants and highlighting what his government describes as a landmark year of policy action and economic nation-building.

In his statement released June 14, 2026, Prime Minister Carney acknowledged the critical role public servants play behind every government initiative, calling their contribution essential to turning ambition into action.

"Over the past year, Canada has moved at a speed and scale not seen in generations to build a stronger, more independent, and more resilient economy," Prime Minister Carney said. "Behind every policy, every program, and every project are public servants whose expertise, commitment, and relentless belief in Canada help turn ambition into action."

A Year of Landmark Initiatives

The Prime Minister used the occasion to highlight a sweeping range of policy achievements delivered over the past year, crediting public servants as the driving force behind their design and implementation.

On the economic front, the Carney government cut taxes on income, homes, and investment, introduced a new Buy Canadian Policy to encourage domestic purchasing and production, and provided billions of dollars in tariff relief to protect and reskill workers in Canada's strategic industries. The government also launched three major new institutions — the Major Projects Office, Build Canada Homes, and the Defence Investment Agency — each standing up in what Carney described as remarkably short order.

On the social policy front, the government introduced legislation to strengthen border security and combat hate, alongside what it is calling the most significant reforms to bail and sentencing laws in a generation. The National School Food Program was made permanent, the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit was launched to help lower costs for families, and Canada's first-ever Food Security Strategy was unveiled — a historic milestone in the country's social policy landscape.

Public Servants at the Centre

While government announcements often spotlight ministers and elected officials, Prime Minister Carney's statement placed Canada's public service squarely at the centre of these achievements, recognizing their expertise and dedication as indispensable to delivering results for Canadians.

"As a result of public servants' commitment to service and their unwavering belief in this country, we are helping build a stronger, more confident Canada," Carney said in closing.

National Public Service Week is observed annually across Canada to recognize the contributions of federal, provincial, and municipal public servants who deliver programs and services to Canadians every day.
