BRAMPTON, ONTARIO | AUGUST 19, 2026 — Peel Regional Police are asking additional victims to come forward as investigators continue an extortion investigation in Brampton involving an alleged online dating setup.
According to police, the victim was contacted through a messaging platform in July by an individual using the name “Manisha Sharma.” After agreeing to meet in person the following month, the victim attended a residential basement apartment near Torbram Road and Peter Robertson Boulevard in Brampton.
Police allege that shortly after the victim arrived, a male suspect entered the room. The victim was allegedly threatened and forced to transfer $6,000 by e-transfer.
TWO BRAMPTON RESIDENTS CHARGED
Following an investigation, Peel Police identified two accused: Harwinder Singh, 35, of Brampton, and Riya Riya, 23, of Brampton.
Both were arrested on August 12, 2026, and charged with:
Police said Singh was additionally charged with uttering threats.
Both accused were held in custody pending a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice.
POLICE BELIEVE THERE MAY BE ADDITIONAL VICTIMS
Investigators believe there may be other victims who experienced similar incidents under the pretext of a casual date and are encouraging them to contact police.
