Prime Minister Mark Carney has wrapped up a two-day working visit to Washington, D.C., where he met with U.S. President Donald J. Trump to advance discussions on trade, defence, and continental security.

The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the Canada–U.S. partnership, highlighting that 85 percent of bilateral trade is now tariff-free — the highest level among America’s trading partners. They agreed to pursue further progress in steel, aluminum, and energy trade, directing officials to finalize sectoral agreements in the coming weeks.

Talks also covered global priorities, including the Middle East conflict. The leaders marked two years since the Hamas attack of October 7, 2023, and discussed President Trump’s ongoing peace initiative involving negotiations between Israel and Hamas in Egypt.

On defence cooperation, Prime Minister Carney underscored Canada’s increased military investments and upcoming Defence Industrial Strategy, with a focus on strengthening Arctic security and modernizing NORAD systems.

During his visit, Carney also met with U.S. Vice President JD Vance, members of the U.S. Senate, and business leaders to discuss the Canada–United States–Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) review and ways to boost competitiveness and economic growth across North America.

Concluding the visit, Carney emphasized that Canada’s approach is focused on “creating greater certainty, security, and prosperity for our workers and businesses,” reaffirming the government’s commitment to protecting Canadian interests while maintaining a strong and collaborative relationship with the United States.
